Crocodiles, Cakes and the Queen's Petticoats

a collection of personal memoirs

from members of the The Women’s Institute

Publication Date December 1, 2011

Following an inspiring collaboration with Queenbee Press, over the past year more than 60 members of the WI have joined together in small groups to follow a bespoke writing course which has led to this moving, historically relevant collection of personal memoirs. From Growing Up to Breaking Away, Passions and Aspirations to Independent Choices, Inspiring People to the Home Hearth, these compelling stories take us through 70 years of women’s lives and make for remarkable and moving reading.

Following many unexpected twists and turns; from a father’s fight with a crocodile in Africa to a letter to a brother who drowned, the description of a seamstress’s early years working in Saville Row to autograph hunting in the ‘60s, colourful, idiosyncratic personal lives and experiences resonate through the tales.

“It’s been an extraordinary journey,” comments Lucy Cavendish, novelist, journalist and co-founder of Queenbee Press. “We encouraged women across the UK to write their own stories after the success of our own writing group The Contemporary Women Writers’ Club. A year on and the NFWI members have surpassed all our expectations. We are proud of them and of our imprint for producing such a significant collection of stories which give us great insight into contemporary women’s lives over the past 80 years. Unputdownable.”
